Diablo 4 microtransactions confirmed by blizzard on top of paid expansions, concerns mount reddit9/11/2023 Maybe your argument would hold any water if you purchased the game in a predefined state that will not change, because it's software running offline on your computer, but that's not what's going on. You are renting space on the server in an online-only game, just like World of Warcraft. That's it.īut with Diablo 3, you paid up front and then what you got changed over time. There is no difference, other than for one you must pay to rent. If Blizz wants to make D4 F2P or sub based, that's their decision I won't be playing, though.Įither way you purchased the game. In a game like Diablo, where I bought it specifically because it's a multiplayer game free from micros, I would be upset to have them introduced suddenly. They're very off-putting for me, and I know I'm not alone there. But I find microtransactions to break my immersion in a game. I wouldn't even notice it in my monthly budget. I mean, the fact is, I make more than enough money to deck out all my characters with micro gear. Do I play video games because I want a simulation of real life? Absolutely not. Whether or not the difference affects actual gameplay, the fact is that one set of players is going to have a better experience because they're spending more money. So, as someone who doesn't microtransact as a rule, the divide comes from the necessity that micro gear be more appealing than normal gear. So as devil's advocate: in World of Warcraft you buy the game AND pay every month, so where's the need for additional revenue from such items? Seems to reason that the costs would be covered in that without them, so why can you rationalize having it in such a game and not Diablo? I don't buy that "people are already accustomed to paying, so it's fine". In fact it seems no stranger than having purchased cosmetic items in a subscription-based game. Even if it didn't result in anything but having cosmetic items, those people who value that would have something rather than nothing. I can't think of any negatives associated with the addition of purchasable cosmetic items, particularly if those purchases went toward increased development for the game. Because it seems people are in overwhelming support of having purchasable cosmetic items.
